Akron is a dream city — at least according to consumer data company GoodCall.
The Fort Mill, S.C., firm released a report Thursday of its “2017 Overlooked Dream Cities” and ranked Akron 52nd out of 461 communities around the country.
GoodCall analyzed cities with fewer than 300,000 people and ranked them based on walkability, crime rate, cost of living and amenities such dining and entertainment.
“The result was a list of Overlooked Dream Cities — places where you’d want to, and can actually afford to, live,” the company said.
Only three other Ohio cities made the top 100: Parma (third), Toledo (85th) and Canton (99th).
“Those of us who call Akron home know that it’s a great, affordable, welcoming place to make a living and raise a family,” Akron Mayor Dan Horrigan said. “We have an attractive combination of big city amenities and small town charm.”
“In Akron, everyone has the opportunity to seek an education, a healthy start, or find their dream home. We are a diverse, hardworking, passionate city experiencing a renaissance of innovation and collaboration. Like I said in my State of the City speech this week, when people ask me, ‘Why Akron?’ I challenge them with ‘Why not Akron?’ ”
Erie, Pa., topped GoodCall’s rankings. The rest of the top five, in order, were: Scranton, Pa.; Parma; Appleton, Wis.; and Allentown, Pa.
GoodCall examines consumer data on issues such as personal finance, education and moving.
